Error message when you try to add or remove a program on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003: "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed"

When you try to install a software application on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you may receive the following error message:

SYMPTOMS
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Note: This problem may also occur when you try to uninstall a software application.

CAUSE :
This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

* The Windows Installer files that are on your hard disk are damaged or are missing.
* You install or remove a program that uses the Windows Installer Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) package file (.msi). For example, this may occur when you try to install Microsoft Office on your computer.

SOLUTION (ad advised by Microsoft)

Method 1: Reregister the Windows Installer
To reregister the Windows Installer, verify the location of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk and in the Windows Registry, and then reregister the Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Determine the location of the Msiexec.exe file on your hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\system32, and then click OK.

Note This step will open the folder where the Msiexec.exe file is located.
2. Make a note of the location of the Msiexec.exe file. The location of the Msiexec.exe file will be a combination of the value in the Address text box and the Msiexec.exe file name itself.

For example if the Address text box contains a value of C:\Windows\system32, the location of the Msiexec.exe file will be C:\Windows\system32\Msiexec.exe.
2. Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Make sure that the location of the Msiexec.exe file in Registry Editor is correct. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open text box, and then click OK.
2. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand SYSTEM, expand CurrentControlSet, expand Services, and then click MSIServer.
3. In the right pane, right-click ImagePath, and then click Modify.
4. In the Value data text box, type the location of the Msiexec.exe file that you determined in step 1, followed by the value of /V, and then click OK.

For example, if the location of the Msiexec.exe file is C:\Windows\system32\Msiexec.exe, type the following text in the Value data text box:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V
5. Click OK to close the Edit String dialog box.
6. Click the File menu, and then click Exit to close Registry Editor.
3. Start your computer in safe mode, and then register the Msiexec.exe file. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Turn off computer or Shut Down.
2. Select the Restart option, and then click OK, or click Restart.
3. Press F8 before the Windows splash screen appears.
4. On the Windows Advanced Option menu, use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode option, and then press ENTER.
5. If you use a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the appropriate operating system from the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.
6. Log on to the computer.
7. Click Start, click Run, type msiexec /regserver in the Open text box, and then click OK.

Note For 64-bit operating systems, you also have to reregister the 64-bit MSI installer. To do this, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\Syswow64\Msiexec /regserver in the Open text box, and then click OK.

On 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system, 32-bit binaries are located in %systemroot%\SysWow64 folder. The 64-bit binaries are located in the %systemroot%\System32 folder.
8. Click Start, and then click Turn off computer or Shut Down.
9. Select the Restart option, and then click OK, or click Restart.

If the issue persists, and you still receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, follow the steps in Method 2.

To reinstall the Windows Installer, rename the damaged Windows Installer files, and then reinstall the Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:

3. Type attrib -r -s -h dllcache, and then press ENTER.

The case is well designed and made. The outer material feels durable, the inner shell soft and well padded. The overall case is well formed and seams look carefully done.

I bought this to be used with the Western Digital Passport II (black) WDXMSxxxx drives (5.1"x3.1"x0.6") and the case is a tad too big for it. The drive has a little too much wiggle room despite the elastic strap inside. I imagine the case will be better fitted for slightly bigger drives, e.g. Seagate's ST9xxxxx1U2-RK.

This is a common problem i faced, here is the solution but i do not know whether it will work properly. I have tried method one with no success, but i guess microsoft need to give serious attention to Windows Installer problems.

Here is how - written by Yuval Sinay of Microsoft Support. He has Listed 12 different method to do this.

Resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems
Method 1

Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.

2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.

3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".

4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

Method 2

Upgrade to Windows Installer version 2 or newer version. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then browse to the following Microsoft Web site:

2. In the left pane tree menu, click "Setup and System Administration", and then click "Setup".

3. Click "Windows Installer", and then click the appropriate link for your operating system.

and clean any entries that you find.

b. Empty/Rename "PendingFileRenameOperations" Registry Key:

If only there is a degree for blogging, LiewCf could have got a phd on this. Edwardkhoo maybe his first degree. - just that the field is not formalised in the education system yet. (think about it) . a person have to acquire some skills to make money online. Whenever there is a learning curve involved, there is 'education' and process of learning going on.

i posted above comment on recent LiewCF blog. DO you really think we need to have a formal education on Blogging and Internet Marketing, like a degree or diploma. I beleive in the marketing field, someone can do a thesis or detail study on this matter. I remember buying a book froma Harvard Graduate entitled 'NetWorth' written by John Hagel III and Marc Singer.

The book basically is about Looking at the future of e-commerce, Hagel (coauthor of Net Gain) and Singer, both principals in the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, add a provocative twist to the conventional view that those companies with the best information about their customers will be the most successful.

They examine not only how companies can acquire information about consumers but also, crucially, how consumers can control dissemination of their personal information and even charge companies for their use of it. To the ever-expanding e-commerce lexicon they add a new term: "infomediaries."

That part of this thread is taken from Amazon. Amazon best decribed the authors book synopsis.

The book published by Harvard Business Press. I believe, we can have someone with a specialised degree in Blogging and Internet Marketing or popularly pronouced by goverments and formal institutions as e-commerce.

The difference between the three windows OS is 'stability and ease of use'.

It is always much easier to use and install new programs with Windows 98 SE and XP than Windows Vista. If you purchase a third party software and install in the later version which is 98, you wont face much problem, during installations and updates for the software.

But with XP and VIsta i always face difficulty with the win32 error and requires a lot of reinstalling and tweaking. As for interface of course Vista provides you with a more modern and elegant looks. Ease of use got to be 98, and os without much hassle.

HomeTips.com nails down big revenue with Google AdSense.
Home advice website HomeTips.com started out in a backyard clubhouse. Seeking a quiet, woodsy spot for writing home improvement books, author Don Vandervort converted the bottom floor of his sons' two-story treehouse into a small office. He launched HomeTips.com from that office in 1997, essentially as an online portfolio to promote his books.

In the decade since, HomeTips has grown into a large and popular site, thanks to the authority Vandervort has developed and the volume of content he has collected and posted from his more than two dozen books, scores of magazine articles, and many television appearances on ABC and HGTV.

Challenge

Until about three years ago, HomeTips' main source of revenue came from writing, publishing, and licensing books and content to other companies, such as Sunset Books and Microsoft. This business expanded significantly after Vandervort moved to larger offices in Glendale, California, and assembled a team of editors, writers, and artists.

Though his book and content business was thriving, the website's meager revenue came from online sales of guides and reports. When a visitor requested one of these, Vandervort would email it to them and trust them to send three dollars. "At that time, I couldn't find a good system for these small transactions," he recalls. "It was an interesting way for us to stay in touch with our visitors' needs, but a money-losing proposition. We needed advertising for the web business to be viable." But the small editorial team was far too busy working at their core business of creating content to develop an advertising program.

Results
In 2003, Vandervort heard about the Google AdSense program and thought it might be helpful for creating incremental revenue that could work for HomeTips. As he notes, "It took about 20 minutes to set it up - and that 20 minutes completely changed our business."

He started by testing AdSense on a few pages. During the first week, he remembers that AdSense revenue paid for coffee; the second week, it paid for lunches. The model clearly worked, so he began expanding the program across the entire site. Now AdSense revenue pays for all salaries, overhead, and business development.

"Google's ability to deliver targeted ads is remarkable," says Vandervort. "In fact, because the ads are so relevant to the content on any given page, we believe that they are a very useful resource for our visitors. This is evidenced by the fact that, on many of our pages, more than 10 percent of our visitors click through to the advertisers for more information," he adds.

HomeTips now sees more than 1 million online visitors each month. "Solid content is the secret to developing a following," says Vandervort. "If you write expert content with your visitor's needs in mind, the rest will follow."

As the business has grown up, so have the sons whose backyard clubhouse Vandervort first commandeered for an office. Now they bring media experience to the business: Gabriel as a former writer/producer of shows for The History Channel and Christian as a cinematographer and film editor. HomeTips anticipates online video to be the next area of growth. "Nothing can show you how to do something as clearly and adeptly as a video," says Vandervort. "As we see the migration of advertising dollars from television to the web, we expect video content and advertising to do very well."

The HomeTips team constantly tests site design, navigation, and ad optimization to improve both the user experience and the success of advertising. Vandervort points out the fact that channel reporting and Google Analytics are a big help in this effort. "These analytics help us zero in on where we're doing the best job and where we need to do more. As a result, our performance just keeps going up."

Ever wish you could edit a PDF file in Microsoft Word? Seems like that should be easy enough, especially when you're dealing with a document that's mostly text. Alas, a PDF is really just a collection of images, meaning you can't edit the contents in their native format.

Of course, there are pricey software utilities that will convert a PDF into Word-friendly text. But there's also PDF to Word, a Web service that accomplishes the same thing absolutely free.

All you do is upload your PDF and choose your desired output format: Word or Rich Text Format. Then you sit tight while the service works its magic, eventually sending you an e-mail with a link to download the converted document.

Best bet: Choose Word over RTF. Word conversions end up looking remarkably similar to your original PDFs. Ultimately, the quality varies from one document to another depending on its content, layout, etc.

This is one seriously handy tool, and you can't beat the price.

During the current recession, companies are moving to the Internet at an accelerating rate, driven in part by the high fixed costs of offline distribution channels. As a result, ecommerce sales have steadily outperformed offline sales for several years now, and this pace should accelerate.

The company that epitomizes this Internet trend is Amazon.com Inc., which enjoyed its best holiday season in nine years in 2008, while traditional retailers were melting down. Amazon accomplished this mainly through two innovative strategies: 1.) by taking advantage of its virtual operating model; and 2.) by generating and using customer information more effectively than any of its traditional, offline retail competitors. Amazon's growth continued in the first quarter -- up 18% versus year-ago. And it's not just books and music, by the way, more than 40% of their sales are now in the "department store" categories they added after inception.

Today, many retailers are moving to the Internet hoping to emulate Amazon; they view this as an easy transition where they can pick up 'free sales' while saving on current infrastructure costs. But they are often unaware that the journey to the Internet is actually profound and challenging. At FreshDirect Inc., an Internet-based grocery delivery service in New York, we have learned that online customers are holding us to a higher standard. And if these customers can't get what they want, they can just as easily go to other online destinations.

At FreshDirect, our core mission is to change our customers' lives by giving them a superior on-line shopping experience. Our 'secret sauce' is our customer database, and the company's growing ability to use it to enhance our customers' experience. For as long as people have shopped with FreshDirect (which has been operating more than five years in the New York metro areas and is achieving real growth even today), the company knows the details of each time a customer has shopped on the site, every unit bought during those visits, and all service interactions. The company also knows exactly who its customers are when they enter the online store for a new shopping visit -- a loyal customer, a new customer, or a lapsed customer who has been away for awhile and needs to be welcomed back.

When you know your customer so well, you have the opportunity to change your whole managerial approach and really make the customer the king in your plans. This leads to what I call managing with intense customer focus.

At FreshDirect, the core of this intensity starts with daily focus. Each day our senior team starts with a formatted review of our immediate business -- yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Each manager uses customer-focused metrics to explain what is going right or wrong versus expectation and what we are doing about it. Shortfalls are addressed and successes are celebrated.

We bring additional customer focus by running about 140 customer surveys a year. We survey weekly, checking key metrics and items of topical importance like the economy or competition, and monthly on deeper topics such as product and service. We also analyze customers' verbatim survey responses to allow us to truly understand where customers have problems we can solve. For most businesses, this type of information is on the periphery of their operations. For us, it is at the center. With technology advances and proven analytical methods, there is no good reason not to use these techniques to get closer to the customer.

Let me give you a couple of examples of how we have used surveys to improve our business:

Packaging: Our customers rate our excess packaging as our most negative feature. I get some satisfaction seeing the broken down boxes as I walk around Manhattan, but our customers have told us loud and clear that this is a negative. Our excess packaging, however, is a result of a rather complex production process and it has been quite an effort to address this issue. But, given our customer focus, we knew we had to. We reworked our whole production process and are now reducing by 1.5 million boxes off a base of about 9 million annually. By the way, we know how this impacts every individual customer so we'll be able to communicate the improvement to each of them for every affected order. Of course, this saves us quite a bit of money, too -- service improvements usually do.
Produce: One of the key issues that customers tell us impedes their usage of FreshDirect is their inability to "squeeze the product". Or, in other words, to see what they shop for. So, again with major effort, we re-did our whole produce production flow (from buying to inventory management to fulfillment) and we now rate all our produce, daily, through a star system which appears on the site. More than 60% of our customers say they now use this service to guide their produce decisions.
Favorites: We have in our database each customer's entire history with us. We have an ability to database manage all this as the customer completes a visit and brings up on the cart page a few selected items, which are items the customer bought frequently in the past but not on this visit. We have only had this up for a couple of months and, already, 20% of our customers use it and they buy two more items, which is a 10% increase in their average order size. Our revenue generated is well above expectation.

Cross-selling: We also have what we call YMAL -- You Might Also Like -- otherwise known as cross-selling -- where we suggest various items customers might like to order to accompany an item in their cart. We have historically made suggestions based on our judgment of what items might be appropriately presented, but more recently we have used our database to suggests 6 items that customers have purchased alongside the featured item -- such as steak with steak sauce and potatoes. This feature, in addition to favorites, already contributes 5% of our total revenue.
All of these are examples of using our rich customer data, real-time, to enhance customer experience. Through this and similar steps, we have driven, year-to-year, the percent of our business done by loyal customers from approximately 25% to, last week, 59% of our total sales. The result of this is a happier customer and, obviously, more revenue for us. After all, it is cheaper and more effective to make current customers more loyal than to spend money attracting new customers. We are profitable and finished the first quarter with a year-to-year growth rate of 15% in what is obviously a particularly difficult economic environment.

But, of course, we can do better -- and we will. I believe real Internet marketing is still in its infancy. Too much attention has been given to digital advertising, and not enough to the creation of loyal customer relationships, which are especially valuable in the "one-click" purchasing environment. The focus on digital advertising has led to a proliferation of clicks and visitors (and declining conversion rates to boot), but has failed to capture the transformative power of the Internet. The true power of Internet marketing is the ability to interact to develop superior customer knowledge and real-time rhythm to significantly build one's business.

Hi Guys,

I must say that after all these years managing various site, i personally recommend Drupal for your site. It is a great content management and web building service. Free of course and like many other open source content management system, Drupal has helpful bunch of programmers-friend ready to answer your technical glitch.

It has wonderful templates, and it is much easier to use the 'blocks' to customize your look.

downloading and installing the modules are easy.

What you do is, register a domain, i personally use eruang.com or rocksoft.com, buy a personal hosting plan + domain (.com) for USD22. (about 3 hours to activate), get my log in password send via email then i would login to Cpanel.

After that, just select 'fantastico' the icon with the (blue color) LOL! and install your Drupal. To make sure drupal page is on the frontpage, before you install go to >file manager and delete the existing >public HTML folder.

When you select install Drupal, (leave blank to be on the main page), it will automatically be your landing page.

Then you can easily add new modules, text WYSIG editor, adsense, image gallery, and all the 'stuff' you need. you can link it with forum, manage user and more stuff.

At first i was like having a headache managing all editing and works with Drupal, but after a while, i'm glad i started with it. Drupal just make it easier.

New statistics have revealed that over one billion global consumers now use the internet.

According to comScore, the one billion mark was reached in December last year, with the Asia Pacific region accounting for the largest proportion of internet users.

It was followed by the regions of Europe, North America, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa, while China was the biggest online country overall in December.

China boasted almost 180 million web users, compared with 163.3 million in the US, 59.9 million in Japan, 36.9 million in Germany and 36.6 million in the UK.

The most visited websites by all global web users consisted of those run by Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! - indicating the potentially large internet marketing audience available for advertisers to tap into via search marketing.

Cellphone Shipments Drop 10 Percent In Q4; Nokia Down, Samsung Up

So the economic downturn is really hurting the cellphone industry..

A lot of the predictions that warned the holiday period would be less than stellar came true: Only 295 million cellphones were shipped worldwide during the period, falling 10 percent from 329 million units in the year-ago period, according to Strategy Analytics, which releases one of the most thorough reports each quarter. The report came out late Thursday night following Samsung's earnings. It concluded that the fourth quarter was the weakest period since 2001 with handset sales increasing only 5 percent in 2008 to 1.18 billion.

Here's the breakdown:

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) still the largest: Nokia shipped 113 million handsets worldwide in Q4 2008, down 15 percent from 2007. Nokia lost marketshare due to weakness in China and in the smartphone segment. Its global marketshare plunged to 31 percent in Q4 from 47 percent in Q4 2007.

Samsung the standout: Samsung performed best during the quarter, grabbing an 18 percent global marketshare. It sold 53 million handsets worldwide in Q4. A breadth of handsets and wider distribution channels contributed. Still, Samsung failed to meet its own target of selling 200 million units for the full-year.

LG Electronics (SEO: 066570) rises to third: LG shipped 26 million handsets worldwide in Q4 2008, and returned to the third position. LG surpassed 100 million units for the full-year for the first time in its history, but failed to be profitable during the quarter and its operating margin slipped to its lowest level for six quarters.

Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) retracts: It sold 24.2 million handsets globally in Q4 2008, falling 21 percent annually. Sony Ericsson recorded its worst profit performance since 2003.

Recovery for Motorola (NYSE: MOT) in 2009: In fifth place, it's possible that a fresh pipeline of new handsets will help Motorola in 2009 because Motorola shipped only 19 million handsets worldwide in Q4, falling from 41 million units a year earlier.

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) growth slows: Apple shipped 4.4 million handsets in Q4, which is up from a year earlier when it shipped 2.3 million, however, its annual growth rate slipped to 88 percent, which is much lower than the 516 percent in Q3.

ISRAEL is not going to show restraint,” Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told the Washington Post on Saturday, after the United States abstained on Friday’s UN Security Council resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.

All last week the speculation grew that Washington was going to defy its Israeli ally for once and vote for the resolution, but literally as the delegates sat down in the council chamber the phone call came from President George W. Bush ordering Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to abstain.

So nothing will stop Israel from hammering the Gaza Strip as hard as it likes — and the situation is unlikely to change with the inauguration of Barack Obama later this month, because he has no intention of squandering his abundant but finite political capital on a quixotic attempt to bring peace to the Middle East. He will spend it instead on goals that have some chance of being achieved, and he will be right to do so.

Yet the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip will almost certainly end within the next two weeks. International revulsion at the carnage among Palestinian civilians will play a certain role. Any big loss of life among Israeli soldiers, or the capture of even one or two soldiers, would turn Israeli public opinion against the war overnight. And the clincher is that the Israeli election is on Feb. 10. The war is being fought now largely to shift the opinion polls in favor of the ruling parties before the election. However, it must be over, and somehow look like a success, before Israelis actually vote. Good luck.

The war against Hamas in Gaza looks more and more like the three-week Israeli war against Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006, which could hardly be called a success. It will last about as long. It will kill about as many Arabs, probably a thousand or so. And it will end with Hamas, like Hezbollah, still able to fire rockets at Israel.

This means that Benjamin Netanyahu, the Likud Party leader who was already leading in the opinion polls, is almost certain to form the next Israeli government. He is the ultimate rejectionist, the man who successfully sabotaged the Oslo Accords and effectively killed the “peace process” during his last term as prime minister in 1996-99.

He rejects the very idea of a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Netanyahu is a glib ideologue who does not understand strategy and sees no reason for Israel to seek peace with its neighbors if the price is giving the Palestinians back their pre-1967 borders. In the long run, therefore, the war is more of a disaster for the Israelis than it is for the Palestinians.

Israel currently enjoys three huge strategic advantages. It has the strongest army in the region by far, backed by the only modern economy and the only technologically competent population. It has an absolute monopoly on nuclear weapons within the region. And it has the unstinting, unquestioning support of the world’s only superpower. But none of these advantages is forever, and Israel needs to make peace with its neighbors while it still possesses them.

The existing Arab regimes are willing to make peace with Israel on the basis of the 1967 borders, mainly because they fear the further radicalization of their own populations, and perhaps even violent revolution, if the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to fester. But the Arabs as a whole have all the time in the world: Sooner or later the wheel will turn and Israel will become vulnerable. If it has not integrated into the region by then, it will be in mortal peril.

It is the usefulness of this war, not its morality, that Israel should be questioning. Unless Israel re-occupies the Gaza Strip permanently — which nobody wants to do, because it would mean a constant stream of Israeli military casualties — then once the army pulls back Hamas will re-emerge, stronger than ever. The Arab regimes that might make peace with Israel will be further undermined, and Israel gets Netanyahu as prime minister.

As was said after the execution of the Duc d’Enghien on Napoleon’s orders, the Gaza operation “is worse than a crime. It is a mistake.”

As the death toll from Israel's war on Gaza continues to climb, Mohammed Ali, an advocacy and media researcher for Oxfam who lives in Gaza City, will be keeping a diary of his feelings and experiences.

Today, I met with people outside the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. I could not believe the stories I was hearing.

An old man told me he was going blind. His diabetic condition was deteriorating and he needed to be treated quickly so as not to lose his sight. He was turned away; he was not in a severe enough state compared to the people filling the hospital corridors and there were not enough doctors to see to him.

Medical teams cannot cope; doctors are working 24 hour shifts, there are not enough beds, equipment or medicine to deal with this humanitarian crisis.

I am hearing more and more stories of people trapped under rubble - ambulance teams unable to reach them, so they wait to die.

While I was out, one man approached me and asked if I would help him to clear up dead bodies.
Another asked if I worked for a humanitarian organization but before I could answer he looked up at the sky and shouted: ""Where is humanity?""

The situation has now reached such a critical point that doctors frequently confront dilemmas such as whether to treat the child who is bleeding to death or the baby who has severe head injuries.

While doctors ask themselves these tough questions, some politicians continue to debate whether or not we are facing a humanitarian crisis.

Since the Israeli military attacks started on Gaza, no salaries have been received and hardly any one has been able to work. Many people here depend on agricultural farming to make a living, and the Gazan population relies on these farmers to be able to eat vegetables; the blockade is allowing hardly anything in.

No farmer will go to their farmland these days. Like all of us, they fear being killed if they move out of their homes or even if they stay put.

Prices of goods are increasing by the day as they become more and more scarce.
Candles are no longer available; a much-needed item these days given the prolonged power cuts we have to endure. We started to use our torches but the batteries soon ran out and there are no batteries to be found here any more.

Every hour, fleeting images from around the world are brought to our TV screens. When I have electricity, I watch these scenes of people enjoying themselves and ask myself, what is the difference between them and me? Why are our lives worlds apart in spite of living on the same planet?

I wonder, are these people asking themselves the same question when they watch the horror unfold in Gaza?

The occupation has put Gaza on a drip feed; we have had just enough to keep us alive but not enough to make us feel as though we are really living - and now this.

If I make it to the end of this conflict, I want to leave the minute I am able to. I do not want my children to grow up in this environment, strangled by the occupation, familiar with the sounds of F-16 fighter jets, unable to leave the country if they need life-saving treatment.
This is not a natural disaster like the Tsunami; this is a man-made disaster that deepens while the world watches.

As the death toll continues to rise, my wife and I spend our waking hours waiting for our turn to come.

Now, at night before trying to sleep I say to her: ""Goodnight my love, see you in heaven.""

REMEMBER the endless media coverage devoted to one abducted British toddler Madeleine McCann and the outpouring public sympathy in terms of hard cash? Remember the deserved global horror when 186 schoolchildren were murdered by terrorists in the Russian town of Beslan? People everywhere generally experience deep emotion when the life of youngsters is cut short by crime or conflict because they only have to look at their own kids to relate to the tragedy.

Yet when it comes to the children of Palestine many unconsciously channel their empathy — or lack of it — through the prism of their ideological/political affinities. They hear the word “Palestinian” and harden their hearts. Blatantly one-sided resolutions recently passed by the US Congress, which prostrates itself before Israel unconditionally, are good examples. Somehow, the members of the House and Senate are able to cast aside their own humanitarian sensitivities to enhance their standing with the pro-Israel lobby.

Almost 300 of Gaza’s children have been murdered by Israeli bombs and artillery shells. Thousands have been robbed of parents, siblings or limbs. All are severely traumatized by sights and scenes no child should ever have to witness and all are terrified by the sounds of F-16s wondering if this time deadly payloads are marked with their address.

Israeli spokespeople insist they do not target civilians but tiny Gaza is not only the most densely populated area of the world, 51 percent of its population are children.

Just think what would happen were 300 Israeli children to meet a similar fate! Would the UN Security Council take weeks to come up with a mealy-mouthed resolution destined to go unheeded then? And what would be the global reaction to the ramming of an Israeli boat carrying aid, such as the Free Gaza Movement’s vessel “Dignity”, recently forced to limp in to the Lebanese port of Tyre where its contingent of 15 international passengers, including former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, received a hero’s welcome?

Would Western television networks and newspapers relegate a Jewish tragedy to sanitized snippets and back pages? Judging from the extensive coverage given to a Palestinian attack on a Jerusalem pizza parlor in 2001 that killed 15, the answer is a firm “no”.

Israel says it is carrying out surgical strikes against Hamas militants but the fire hitting Gaza’s shoreline emanating from Israeli gunboats cannot discriminate and neither can tank shells, mortars, cluster bombs and white phosphorus. If we accept that Israel’s strikes are precise, then we must also accept the Jewish state has committed serious war crimes by bombing clearly marked ambulances, hospitals, schools and UN-run civilian refuges.

No wonder Israel has barred foreign journalists, activists and medics from entering Gaza. It does not want third-party witnesses recording its crimes or negating its weasel words carefully crafted by expert propagandists, such as Israel’s ambassador to Britain Ron Prosser and spokesman to the prime minister’s office Mark Regev — both working overtime to push the same rarely-challenged lies.

There is no doubt that the so-called international community treats Palestinians as second- or even third-class citizens without the right to freedom and access to basic human needs. Western countries and others have collaborated in subjecting Gaza to an 18-month-long siege that under international law is tantamount to a declaration of war. They have also stood by silently allowing Israel to continue its settlement expansion, land grabs and construction of an apartheid wall, ruled illegal by the International Court of Justice.

Plus, the United Nations which was responsible for Israel’s birth has not been effective in protecting Palestinian rights or upholding 35 of its own resolutions against Israel.
Many nations have designated the Palestinian resistance as “terrorist” although an occupied population has the right to self-determination under the UN Charter.

It’s absolutely true that some of the methods used by Palestinian resistance groups have been unpalatable in that civilians have been deliberately targeted in the way that Israel is doing now despite its shrill cries to the contrary.

The fact that the IAF bombed a UN school after receiving the coordinates and a house filled with displaced civilians it had told to flee exposes any pretense Israel may have to morality. And to compound its ruthlessness, Israel prevented rescue workers and ambulances from reaching the scene for four days when starving toddlers still clinging to the corpses of their mothers were discovered. Deprived of sophisticated weaponry, stripped of their rights under international law and the Geneva Conventions, besieged by the international community, blamed by the US for their own victimhood and virtually abandoned by fellow-Arabs, the Palestinians are shamefully left to starve, suffer and die.

Lastly, I would send the following message to Israel with apologies to Shakespeare for mangling The Merchant of Venice: “Hath not a Palestinian hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions, fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Jew is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, do we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that”.

Last month, while i was driving north from JB to Melaka, about 5.30 in the evening..the two 'mole' proton MPV overtake me. At first i look at the rear mirror and saw two odd looking cars moving towards me.

they were driving about 15 meters apart. from the speed im driving with i assume the drive about 140km perhour.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that Google has left some basic capabilities to third-party Android developers? Video playback in the day where multimedia is king seems like such an obvious application to perfect and include on a platform with a lot to prove, yet the only video-related application the T-Mobile G1 sports is a YouTube application.

That makes perfect sense, YouTube having been bought by Google and all, but what if the videos you want to see plain haven't been uploaded yet?

Thankfully, the Android add-on Video Player reliably fills a basic role by playing MPEG4 or 3GPP videos (H.264 and H.263 standards) from the SD card. It is, however, very light on the controls, with just a pause button and forward and backward advance and no extras on the Menu button. Android Market developer Jeff Hamilton also states in his specifications that videos need to be 480 by 352 for proper playback. We were able to convert, load, and play back 5-minute and 45-minute videos without a hitch.

TuneWiki, which I wrote about yesterday, is more of a replacement for the music player, though it also enhances basic YouTube functions when music videos are the focus. TuneWiki will attempt to sync lyrics to the music video and will save videos for repeat playback and karaoke practice.

So far, these options are slim when compared with other mobile platforms that offer fuller management features out of the box.

How to Take Your Eyes OFF the Screen/Monitor?

Probably this has become a number one problem thesedays. "Please take me away from my computer...!". You can sit for hours in front of the pc/laptop surfing the internet and let precious times flies. Time just fly when you sit in front of the laptop, suddenly its getting dark outside.

Hmm. seems like a problem here. We are missing out on the bright shiny - lunch in the park, playing in the field and socializing during teh tarik time - TTT, 3T (whatever you call it) or just Nge-Teh!

Worst case, we prefer not to bring the family for a trip during weekend, just to do some internet browsing and marketing. I did not buy newspaper anymore. A local newspaper will cost me RM1.50 perday, so every month 1.50 for 30 days (some paper during weekend, priced more) so RM45.00.

I pay for internet connection permonth RM68.00 / celcom 385kbps (getting better now)

That is RM23 more than buying newspaper. But I can get to read news from all over the world and actually reading 3 - 5 different newspaper, local and international(not to mention www.chedet.com blog)

I miss the smell of freshly printed papers, but I enjoyed reading more.

This is one of the common reason why we go online everyday. (Still, the main question is still not answered, How to Take Your Eyes of the Screen/Monitor?

Just take the time off to rest, go outside and get some ice cream or eat some cendol, go cycling, play badminton (use the gate or fence as the net (or pretend there is a net in front of you, imagine the line approximately your chest height..LOL), play with your kids, 'timbang' the takraw rattan in your limited porch area, wash your aquarium, get to the kitchen and cooks some chocolate bread or muffins, or just prepare a healthy meal.

If you are married, your wife will start nagging at you. I get this all the time as the hour past. I must stop. I must limit myself only for the most two hours with this laptop. you must limit your time too.

Its better to get a good night sleep than staying up and watch the new video on you tube.

Enough internet marketing, take some time to rest. Your body will send you signals. be alert and respond to it.

Green plants makes the eyes more refresh. Go Green in the office too, because, at least 5 quality hours is spent in front of the monitors. not to mention myspace and frienster or updating blogs. Itsprohibited during office hour.

Your eyes hurt. Your head aches. And there you sit, peering at your computer monitor. If you're one of the many people who use computers every day — either for work or personal use — you may experience eyestrain as a result.

Eyestrain: Signs and symptoms

Common signs and symptoms include:

Sore, tired, burning or itching eyes
Watery eyes
Dry eyes
Blurred or double vision
Headache and sore neck
Difficulty shifting focus between monitor and paper documents in your work area
Color fringes or afterimages when you look away from the monitor
Increased sensitivity to light
Eyestrain associated with computer use isn't thought to have serious or long-term consequences, but it's disruptive and unpleasant. Though you may not be able to change the nature of your job or all the factors that can cause eyestrain, you can take steps to reduce the strain.

New habits can help relieve eyestrain

A few simple adjustments in how you work or surf the Internet can give your eyes a much-needed rest.

Follow these simple tips to reduce eyestrain:

Take eye breaks. Throughout the day, give your eyes a break by forcing them to focus on something other than on your screen. Try the following exercise: Hold a finger a few inches in front of your face; focus on the finger as you slowly move it away; focus on something far in the distance and then back to the finger; slowly bring the finger back toward your face. Next, shift your focus to something farther than eight feet away and hold your eyes there for a few seconds. Repeat this exercise three times, several times a day.

Change the pace. Try to stand up and move around at least once every hour or so. If possible, lean back and close your eyes for a few moments. At the very least, try to give yourself a five-minute rest every hour. Do other work, such as phone calls or filing, during this time.

Blink often to refresh your eyes. Because many people blink less than normal when working at a computer, dry eyes can result from prolonged computer use. Blinking produces tears that can help moisten and lubricate your eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink more often.

Consider using artificial teardrops. Available over the counter, artificial tears can help relieve dry eyes that result from prolonged sessions at the computer.

Practice relaxation. Ease muscle tension with this relaxation exercise: Place your elbows on your desk, palms facing up; let your weight fall forward and your head fall into your hands; position your head so that your eyebrows rest on the base of your palms, with your fingers extended toward your forehead; close your eyes and take a deep breath through your nose; hold it for four seconds, then exhale. Continue this deep breathing for 15 to 30 seconds. Perform this simple exercise several times a day.

Get appropriate eyewear. If you wear glasses or contacts, make sure the correction is right for computer work. Most lenses are fitted for reading print and may not be optimal for computer work. Glasses or contact lenses designed specifically for computer work may be a worthwhile investment.

Put your workstation in order

Take some of the strain off your eyes by making sure your desk space is set up in an appropriate and eye-friendly way.

Adjust your monitor. Position your monitor directly in front of you about 20 to 28 inches from your eyes. Many people find that putting the screen at arm's length is about right. If you need to get too close to read small type, consider increasing the font size.

Keep the top of your screen at eye level or below so that you look down slightly at your work. If it's too high or too low, it can lead to a sore neck. If you have your monitor on top of your central processing unit (CPU), consider placing the CPU to the side or on the floor. And if you wear bifocals or trifocals, keep in mind that you may have a tendency to tilt your head backwards so that you can see through the lower portion of your glasses. To adjust for this, consider lowering your monitor a few inches or buying glasses designed for computer work.

Position your keyboard properly. Place your keyboard directly in front of your monitor. If you place it at an angle or to the side, your eyes have to focus at different distances from the screen, a tiring activity.

Keep reference materials nearby. Place reading and reference material on a document holder beside your monitor and at the same level, angle and distance from your eyes as the monitor is from your eyes. This way your eyes aren't constantly readjusting.

Check the lighting and reduce glare. Bright lighting and too much glare can make it difficult to see objects on your screen and strain your eyes. To check glare, sit at your computer with the monitor off. This allows you to see the reflected light and images. Note any intense glare. The worst problems are generally from sources above or behind you, including fluorescent lighting and sunlight.

If possible, place your monitor so that the brightest light sources are off to the side, at a right angle to your monitor. Consider turning off some or all of the overhead lights. If you need light for writing or reading, use an adjustable desk lamp. Close blinds and shades and avoid placing your monitor directly in front of a window or white wall. Use a glare-reducing screen to minimize glare from overhead lighting.

Finally, adjust the contrast and brightness on the monitor to a level that's comfortable for you, making sure the letters on the screen are easy to read.

Also wipe the dust from your computer screen regularly. Dust on the screen cuts down on contrast and may contribute to glare and reflection problems.

If problems still persist, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. See your doctor if you have:

Prolonged eye discomfort
A noticeable change in vision
Double vision
But if you're like most people, making a few simple adjustments can help keep your eyes rested and ready.

This week, iRex Technologies started selling its first device?the iRex Digital Reader 1000S?but at $749 it is a disappointment and doesn't stack up to rivals, including the Amazon ( NSDQ: AMZN) Kindle or the Sony ( NYSE: SNE) Reader, reports USA Today. The devices are increasingly trying to target the business segment, who travel a lot and and want to eliminate some of the paper they carry around.

Some of the cool things about the iRex are better than the Kindle, such as the 10.2 inch display, and the fact that it comes with a digitizer and stylus, allowing people to be able to make annotations on the screen. But the big draw-back of the iRex is that it costs an additional $100 for a wireless version ($849). And still, the wireless version only includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which provides access to newspapers and other content through a downloading service.

That differs drastically from the Kindle, which uses a cellular connection, so that users have access to new books and content when they are within range of a signal. Last week, at GigaOm's Mobilize event in San Francisco, everyone pointed to that feature as the beauty of the $359 device. As people noted on a couple of different panels, Amazon did a great job of hiding the complexity of the network. Because the cost of data is tacked on to the price of a book, customers don't have to be conscience about connecting to a network, or wonder how much the download may cost. Most won't ever know they are connecting to Sprint's ( NYSE: S) wireless network.

Apple iPhone Vs Google's T-Mobile's G1

ok, so there is new competiton now for iphone. Th ebiggest threat, emm..maybe a threat, (they are new in mobile/cell phone business) is the new Google's T-Mobile's G1.

It was on the main page of Yahoo.com news, the stories goes;

Watch out, Apple. The G1 may not be as sleek and sexy as the iPhone, but its peppy, easy-to-use touchscreen interface makes mincemeat of all the other iPhone wanna-bes, and it packs in some killer features—like 360-degree Street View—that the iPhone has yet to match.

Granted, I've only had a few minutes of hands-on time with the T-Mobile G1, so this doesn't count as a review—we're just talking first impressions here. But first impressions count, and the G1 ($179, available October 22) scored big during my brief test drive. (Click here for full specs and details on Tuesday's announcement.)

So, let's talk about the hardware first. As I mentioned in my initial post, the G1 is slightly bulkier and heavier and—well, let's just say it—a little uglier than the slim, sexy iPhone. Weighing in at 5.6 ounces, I could definitely feel the G1's extra bulk in my hand, although at just 0.6 inches thick, the G1 should fit relatively easily in a jeans pocket.

The G1's 3.17-inch screen is slightly smaller than the iPhone's 3.5-inch display, and at first glance, its interface looks a bit dull compared to Apple's red-hot handset (and unfortunately, my shaky photography skills don't help). But beneath the G1's sliding display, we get a surprise—a full, Sidekick-sized QWERTY keypad, perfect for those who don't want to deal with a touchscreen keyboard. There's also a trackball, a Home key, and physical Call and End buttons.

While the G1's main screen isn't quite as eye-popping as the iPhone's, the Android-powered display was surprisingly responsive—a quick flick of my fingertip opened a windowshade of applications, while tapping the status bar at the top of the screen instantly revealed e-mail, SMS, and voice-mail alerts. Indeed, tapping and scrolling around the G1's various menus was a seamless pleasure, akin to what you'd expect from an iPhone. And while leading iPhone competitors like the Samsung Instinct always felt a bit sluggish to me, the G1's peppy interface responded quickly to my every touch.

Of course, you'll get the most out of the G1 if you're using Google's suite of online applications, all of which sync automatically the moment you sign in. The push Gmail client features threaded messaging, just like you'd expect online, and you can star messages, organize them with filters, and even conduct Google searches within the e-mail client itself. You can also use the client to check your POP and IMAP accounts—no full-on Exchange syncing, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, third-party developers are free to create their own Exchange syncing apps for Android.

The G1's dialer and contact list immediately grabs all your online Google calendar info and contacts—and for those with IM accounts, the G1 will indicate which of your contacts happen to be signed in for chat, an "online presence" feature familiar to anyone with a Helio phone. As with the iPhone, you can flick your contact list with a finger, spinning it roulette-style. Nice.

The Android Web browser on the G1 immediately takes its place as one of the top mobile browsers I've seen, right next to those on the iPhone and Nokia Nseries handsets. Pages rendered quickly (over Wi-Fi, at least) and perfectly; a tap brings up zoom in/out controls, while a touch-enabled magnifying glass lets you quickly scan lengthy Web pages. (No multitouch-enabled "pinching," however.) See a picture you want to save? Just touch and hold; a contextual menu pops up with a variety of options, including saving the image to the phone.

Coolest of all, though, is Google Maps on the G1, complete with GPS and Street View. In the demo I saw (over Wi-Fi), maps loaded quickly, as did Street View images, and they refreshed almost instantly as I dragged maps and images around with my finger.

The best part? Using Street View with the G1's built-in compass. Say you're facing north; you hold the G1 in front of you, select Street View, and you'll see your street from a north-facing vantage point. Turn east—with the phone still in front of you—and the Street View image follows. Angle the phone skyward, and Street View moves likewise. Way, way cool (and impressively fast and responsive, to boot).

Disappointments? Well, the G1's music player is no great shakes; it'll play your standard MP3/WMA/AAC/Ogg Vobis files, but the bare-bones player interface can't hold a candle to the iPhone's. (At least you can buy MP3s wirelessly using the bundled Amazon application.) Also, there's no video player—then again, as T-Mobile reps kept repeating, there's nothing stopping third-party developers from building one (or many).

And while the G1's three-megapixel camera tops the iPhone's 2MP shooter, the G1 doesn't come with built-in video recording—although (yep, you guessed it), third-party developers should feel free to fill the void.

Indeed, the T-Mobile reps I spoke to said that any and all of the G1's main features are open to third-party development—the dialer, the e-mail client, the music player, you name it. Again, that's the beauty of the open-source Android OS (versus Apple's we-must-control-everything approach).

Of course, the G1's biggest drawback may end up lying squarely with T-Mobile—or, more specifically, its nascent 3G network. When the G1 goes on sale next month, only about 21 markets will be covered by T-Mobile's new HSDPA network—so if you're outside those cities, you'll have to make do with poky EDGE data or Wi-Fi.

Overall, however, I'm pretty impressed. I wasn't that wowed by the G1's uninspiring design, but Android shows a lot of promise, and its peppy performance on the G1 is a huge plus.

1. Write an attention-grabbing headline

Your headline is the MOST IMPORTANT part of your site!

Here's why: you have LESS than 10 seconds to get your visitors' attention, and show them you've got the perfect solution to their problem. So the first thing they should see is a headline that clearly states the biggest benefit your site has to offer.

Your headline should be located at the very top center of your page in a larger font size that naturally attracts attention.

And it should tell visitors exactly how your site will make their lives easier... save them money... save them time... provide additional income... or simply make them feel better.

Use bolding, italics, and highlighting to emphasize the main benefits in your headline, so they leap out and grab your visitors' attention.

(But don't overdo it! Nothing screams "amateur" more than a site that has too much fancy formatting.)

2. Create benefit-driven salescopy that compels your visitors to buy

On the Internet, you don't have any face-to-face interaction with your potential buyers -- so your salescopy needs to do the job that a real-live salesperson would do. It has to introduce your product, explain the benefits of using it, and sell potential buyers on the value of your offer.

When you write your salescopy, you need to speak directly to your visitors' needs -- and you need to focus on the BENEFITS of using your product (as opposed to your product's features).

If you're having trouble telling a benefit from a feature, here's an example: a feature of a product might be "sturdy polished aluminum construction." The benefit would be "lasts longer so you save money on replacement costs."

3. Follow established design principles

When you're designing the look of your site, choose a simple color scheme and a couple of fonts and stick with them. Nothing looks more amateurish than a mishmash of many different fonts and colors. Also, resist the urge to add textures or use dark backgrounds.

People don't come to your site to admire your elaborate design scheme. They want to know about your offer. That's why you need to make sure they can easily read your salescopy.

Also, avoid using unnecessary graphics and images. Unless your image is serving a direct purpose (a picture of you, a product shot, etc.), it's going to take attention away from your sales message. Same goes for animation, audio and video.

Remember: You're not trying to amuse or entertain with your site. Your goal is to SELL!

4. Include a strong call to action

Don't make your visitors guess what they're supposed to do on your site. You must give them a strong call to action and tell them exactly what you want them to do!

5. Establish your credibility

Why should someone buy from you? What makes YOUR information more reliable than your competitors? You need to provide answers to these questions, so visitors feel comfortable buying from you.

One of the best ways to establish your credibility is to list your accomplishments, qualifications, and experience -- so long as they're related to your offer. Once you've sold some product and are getting testimonials from satisfied customers, be sure to include them on your site as well.

6. Make it impossible for someone to say no!

By building a lot of value into your offer, you can make people feel like saying "no" would actually cost them money! You can achieve this by carefully explaining how much money -- or time, or trouble -- your solution will save them.

Step.1 Check Points
In order to import a car from Japan, you need to be familiar with Japanese used car import procedures, import regulations, money transfer methods and common trade terms. Below are some areas that you should research into as you prepare to import a car from Japan. Having a good understanding of the points below will make your business interaction with Japanese used car exporter more pleasurable.

1)Import procedures and government regulations
To ensure smooth import process, you need to understand the import procedures and government/custom regulations in the country of destination e.g. regulation on emissions, age of vehicle, steering, aftermarket products and vehicle test necessary before importation etc. In almost all countries, there is a set of rules and regulations that must be followed by importers of used cars. Pro-forma Invoice
A Pro-forma Invoice is the first draft of a seller’s bill to the buyer. It is a quotation sent from the seller to the buyer containing description of goods to be delivered. Once you have reached an agreement with Japanese car exporter on price and condition of the Japanese vehicle, the exporter will send you a pro-forma invoice followed by an invoice. You will be required to sign the invoice and send it to the Japanese car exporter followed by the transfer on of money as agreed on the invoice. Almost all Japanese car exporters will require wire transfer (also called telegraphic transfers or”TT”) with the exception of countries that must use”LC” only. Most Japanese used car dealers will not accept credit card means of payment. Please consult the dealer regarding method of payment and bank information.

Step.5 Shipping
After Japanese car exporter has confirmed your payment, he will arrange the shipping of the vehicle to the port of destination. The dealer will also send you necessary documents such bill of landing and vehicle de-registration form among other documents that will be necessary during custom clearance. Shipping period will differ from country to country depending on the availability of space in the vessels bound for various destinations among other factors. Once the vehicle has arrived at the port of destination, you will be required to follow custom clearance procedures in your country.

Exterior

Overall shape is like the Toyota Wish but the rear section of the roof does not slope down slightly like the Wish to improve headroom for the third row.
Tail lamps use LEDs and have a vertical design extending from the top to down, unlike the Wish’s which do not extend into the D pillar. The tail lamps are slimmer at the top but curve out a little at the bottom, similiar to the Volvo XC90’s design. The signal lamps in the light cluster are positioned towards the top for better visibility. You can actually see this in the previously revealed sketch and the teaser video above.
There is a swage line on the side profile of the MPV.
Regular swing doors instead of sliding doors.
The spare tyre is installed outside under the chassis instead of kept in the car so that you can get access to it easily when the luggage space is occupied.
Interior

The peekaboo box revealed a two-tone beige interior, but sources in Proton say the colour of the interior has not been finalised. It may be either beige or grey.
Luggage space is not that great with the third row of seats in place, but can fit one large golf bag. This means balik kampung with 7 people loaded and luggage for 7 will be a challenge.
Second row splits 60:40 while the third row is a 50:50 split. The seats fold flat.
Interior roof height is designed to be quite decent to accomodate people who want to ride with songkoks and turbans.
The shifter uses a gated shift and is dashboard-mounted rather than mounted between the front two seats, a common modern trend with MPV-like vehicles.
The in-car entertainment is a 2-DIN unit. There are options for a DVD player with an LCD display for the movie mounted at the second row roof area. There is also an option in the future for GPS navigation.
The 2-DIN head unit is at the top of the center dash area below the aircond vents, and below it comes the air conditioning controls which are three knobs arranged in a triangle shape. Below that is the shifter.
There are aircond blowers for the second and third row situation at the top left and right of the cabin roof (near the grip handles). Proton source says after testing this produced the best airflow.
There is no armrest between the front two seats but the armrest is instead a fold-down type integrated into the seat itself.
Chassis

The wheelbase of the chassis is estimated to be more than 2,700mm but less than 2,800mm. In comparison, the Honda Stream has a wheelbase of 2740mm, the Wish is 2,750mm, the Innova 2,750mm, the Livina 2600mm, and the Mazda5 2750mm.
The front suspension design uses MacPherson struts and the rear design uses a torsion beam to minimize suspension system intrusion into cabin.
The front end is designed, supplied and assembled as a single module for weight reduction and ease of installation to minimize QC problems.
The MPV is said to have very good crash safety design from Proton internal crash tests. A few MPVs will be sent for official crash testing and rating soon.

If any of you were really hoping the rumors of a Kindle follow-up this year were true, then I’m afraid you aren’t going to like this news.

Craig Berman, chief spokesman for Amazon was asked outright if Kindle 2.0 was coming soon by the New York Times. His response:

Don’t believe everything you read … There’s a lot of rumor and speculation about the Kindle. One thing I can tell you for sure is that there will be no new version of the Kindle this year. A new version is possible sometime next year at the earliest.

There have been two main rumors circling the Internet. The first being that there would be a follow-up Kindle very soon and another saying that Amazon were going to target students with a version of the existing Kindle. Berman quashed rumors of a follow-up this year, but did not mention a possible education version of the original appearing.

The one thing you can state as not being a rumor is the fact the Kindle is here to stay. I think even Amazon must be impressed with its popularity selling an estimated 240,000 units already.

I have stated before that the Kindle 2 is going to be the tipping point for e-book readers really taking off. Amazon have tested the water, been successful and got loads of feedback. They can now put that new knowledge and experience into the Kindle 2 and they could have something as popular as the iPhone – if they get it right.

I think it would be a bad move to start releasing different versions just for students. Students want the best kit and usually have it before everyone else. They will want Kindle 2 just like everyone else, not Kindle: Student Edition. I hope Amazon just put all their efforts into Kindle 2 and look at releasing it worldwide more quickly.

Competition hots up in local telecoms sector

THE competition within Malaysia's mobile space has turned up many notches over the past quarters and is expected to intensify further.

The biggest talk this time is the impending launch of DiGi.Com Bhd's third generation (3G) services and the implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) next month.

“DiGi has been very innovative in terms of offerings and marketing, therefore all eyes will be on DiGi late this year when it rolls out the 3G services,” an analyst said.

DiGi was the only mobile operator that did not receive a 3G licence or a WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) operating licence.

However, it has since formed an alliance with TIME dotCom Bhd for the provision of 3G services.

Analysts said the much-anticipated liberalisation could shake up the whole mobile industry, shrinking customers' monthly bills and pressuring the profit margins of the mobile phone operators.

“With the increased competitive pressure, telecommunication companies (telcos) might lower the tariffs further to stimulate stronger call elasticity and be more innovative without pressuring their margins,” an analyst said.

With MNP coming into the picture, DiGi and rivals Maxis Communications Bhd and Celcom (M) Bhd are aggressively launching new services and promotions in the postpaid segment, hoping to retain customers and grab new ones.

“Although there could be a slight delay in the implementation of MNP, mobile operators have wasted no time. Mobile operators have repackaged and introduced new packages to entice customers,” an analyst said.

“The mobile market is showing a decline in growth, with operators focusing on the migration of customers from prepaid to postpaid. The implementation of MNP in the mobile sector could pave a growth path for the industry,” he added.

DiGi has recently launched four new postpaid plans – DG250, DG150, DG50 and DG20. The DG250 gives customers free local voice calls and text messaging to any network at anytime for RM250 a month.

Maxis Communications Bhd, which has been leading the very competitive industry with over 41% market share, has also repackaged its postpaid plans and introduced a new service, Hotlink 365, recently to cater to a segment of users with low usage.

Aseambankers Equity Research is optimistic on DiGi, as the mobile operator would have more potential to grow its postpaid segment when MNP is implemented.

Although U Mobile Sdn Bhd is a relatively new 3G service provider, the operator has managed to acquire 100,000 subscribers since its launch in April.

U Mobile chief executive officer Oh Kwang-Jin said the company was the only 3G operator in Malaysia that offered per-second billing across all its plans. “We want to keep our customers happy and we intend to continue to listen to them intently as part of our ongoing mission to provide the best value in the industry,” he said.

U Mobile now offers three postpaid plans. Although its coverage is centred in the Klang Valley, it is expanding its network to cover all major cities and towns nationwide.

OSK Research does not see any threat from U Mobile's newly-launched per-second billing prepaid plan on its competitors, although it believes the telco would have its niche appeal.

The brokerage said while U Mobile's prepaid plan offered the lowest charge at 0.8 sen per second, it would only be cheaper if calls lasted less than 24 seconds, whereas DiGi’s inhouse prepaid brand Happy, which is capped at 99 sen per call, would actually save more money for calls exceeding 125 seconds.

OSK said it was difficult for U Mobile to price its tariff too competitively, as it purchased wholesale minutes from Celcom at a higher rate.

On a different development, Maxis is said to be bidding the first right from Apple Inc to bring the iPhone into the local market.

Analysts said if Maxis successfully introduced the iPhone in Malaysia, the telco could gain an even bigger edge over rivals.

“If Maxis could secure the rights to bring iPhone in, it will be the perfect lure for mobile users to switch service providers. This will give Maxis access to a wider business user segment,” another analyst said.

As competition heats up and the date of MNP draws nearer, analysts expect more activities and roadshows by mobile operators in a bid to lure customers from competitors .
